Causes of Cellulite

Cellulite is an unsightly problem that is most commonly found on the hips, thighs and buttocks of women. Men can get cellulite, but most of them don't because of biological differences. Cellulite forms when fat is accumulated under a honeycomb shaped network of fibrous tissue called septae. The septae gets rigid and misshapen when the fat expands around it, which causes the dimpled appearance. Cellulite is not just a problem that plagues the overweight. Even trim, fit women often have cellulite. There are many potential causes of cellulite.

One possible cause is an imbalance of estrogen in the body. However, this is not the only possible cause or even the most prevalent one. Some experts think that cellulite is caused by poor circulation, while others claim it is a genetic problem. Still others claim cellulite is a normal byproduct of aging. It is also thought that a lack of physical exercise, poor diet, and unhealthy lifestyle can all contribute to whether or not a woman gets cellulite and how severe it is.

Because no one is exactly sure what causes cellulite, it's best to combine several treatment approaches when fighting the problem. The simplest and potentially most effective type of cellulite treatment is exercise. Cardiovascular activity can burn off excess fat, improve the blood flow and circulation, and tone the body. When combined with regular strength training sessions, the cellulite reducing effects are increased. It's recommended that everyone get at least three sessions of cardio and three sessions of strength training per week. Be sure to check with your physician before beginning a new exercise program. To enhance the results of your exercise plan, eat a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lowfat dairy and lean protein. And, make sure to drink lots of water.

There are lots of cellulite creams out there that claim to decrease the appearance of cellulite. Because these creams do not address the causes of cellulite, it's unlikely that they can offer permanent and lasting results. You might find that combining cellulite creams with your diet and exercise plan may enhance your results and improve the cosmetic appearance of the skin. Some women think that a tan can make cellulite appear less noticeable. Try using sunless tanning products and body bronzers as opposed to sunbathing or tanning beds to eliminate the risk of sun damage and skin cancer.
